As Papers on Language and Literature enters its 53rd year, it remains committed, as strongly as ever, to publishing rigorous scholarship. PLL has always sought to break through boundaries and barriers. Since its inception, it has been a truly—and uniquely—generalist publication that has transcended the notion of a national literature. In keeping with new scholarly and pedagogical developments, PLL is looking at once to broaden and to loosen up the definition of language and to include in it the languages of film, print culture, translation, and digital humanities. We welcome special-issue proposals and standalone contributions on these and related subjects.
You may want to identify certain types of equipment by vendor name and brand or category (., ultracentrifuge vs. prep centrifuge), particularly if they are not commonly found in most labs. It is appropriate to report, parenthetically, the source (vendor) and catalog number for reagents used, ., " ....poly-L-lysine (Sigma #1309) ." When using a method described in another published source, you can save time and words by providing the relevant citation to the source. Always make sure to describe any modifications you have made of a standard or published method.
Your plot could also have similarities to whole groups of other stories, all having conventional or easily recognizable plots. These types of stories are often called genres. Some popular genres include the gothic, the romance, the detective story, the bildungsroman (this is just a German term for a novel that is centered around the development of its main characters), and the novel of manners (a novel that focuses on the behavior and foibles of a particular class or social group). These categories are often helpful in characterizing a piece of writing, but this approach has its limitations. Many novels don’t fit nicely into one genre, and others seem to borrow a bit from a variety of different categories. For example, given my working thesis on education, I am more interested in Victor’s development than in relating Frankenstein to the gothic genre, so I might decide to treat the novel as a bildungsroman.
